Our Inspiration

While volunteering in South Sudan as an English teacher, Mary Grace became friends with six-year-old Khan, an orphan amputee. In escorting Khan to the local hospital for his routine stump bandage changes and visiting the other patients, she got to know the director of the field hospital, Tito. Tito and his wife Roda, with six kids of their own, welcomed Khan into their family when they fled the war.

We recently celebrated Khan finally receiving his prosthetic leg to help him on his journey toward healing and success.

Gloria’s Grant

Dr. Gloria Ann Evans is a woman of many talents. She is one of North Carolina’s earliest nurse practitioners (prescribing number 61), served as an officer in the USAF Nurse Corps during Vietnam era, completed a double major in psychology and sociology with some anthropology to top it off, holds a master’s in public health nursing, a doctorate in maternal and child health, a fellowship in child and family policy, completed original research in trauma, and serves on five different boards to support education and medical efforts across the continent of Africa. Regarding UOCO, Gloria Ann Evans has graciously provided a large stock donation, allowing us to build an entirely new compound to house and teach the children we serve. Not only will this new compound increase our schools capacity, but will also provide a better quality of life and learning for the children. Construction is ongoing; we will share updates as things move along. Gloria is also known in South Sudan as “Loc Keel” which translates to “one who cares for all”. Her son created the graphic shown below.
